Der Malerweg

On June 10, 2006, one of the most wildly romantic German roaming routes was revitatized. Already 200 years ago travellers were enthusiastic about the unexhaustible wealth of bizarre rock formations, wildly romantic gorges, sublime table mountains with breath taking views.

Many painters of later generations followed their tracks through the Elbe River Sandstone Mountains, among them such famous painters like Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Ludwig Richter. All of them preference to a route which in later years became famous as Malerweg (Painters'Path). Nowadays it also extends on the left side of the Elbe river.

The quality ofthe roaming path in the National Park and the National Park region of 'Saxon Switzerland" is a feature of a varied and diverse landscape, impressive viewpoints, natural paths as well as numerous inn-stop-possibilities by the pathside.

Hiking with or without luggage - as an occasional Wanderer or as a rambler - hiking as a sporty challenge or simply enjoying nature during your walk: hiking through this area everyone will find unparalleled pleasure.

In 2007 the Malerweg was honoured with 2 prizes: it was chosen as Germany's most beautiful hiking path by the Jury of the hiking magazine. Wanting to find out the most populär hiking path the public - for the second time - put the Malerweg on second place.
